Chapter 2 and 4

  1. Through the existence of human race, places of worship played a major part in conveying the message of efforts to obtain eternal life. Not only were these places grand in size, the structural design conveyed the message of eternity and left an unforgettable impression of wonder. These perceptions of inexplicability beckoned the increasing desire to continue to exist, which reinforced attempts to develop a place of heavenliness on Earth in hope to preserve their soul for the unknown. Cathedrals of Chartres (French) and Wells (English) depict different styles of architecture. Chartres Cathedral’s emphasis on grand-scale of inner space created by high vaults and Wells Cathedral’s emphasis on length accompanied by compressed interior, the sculptures and stained glass of both of these two succeeded in delivering the message of godliness. While both achieved the goal of delivering the message of heavenliness, Wells Cathedral came closer to delivering the picture of what heaven may be like. Chartres cathedral is without doubt defeated by the happy aura of the establishment of Wells.

  2. I really like the Paris Street, A Rainy Day painting. To me it looks very realistic, especially the way the wet ground looks. However, it does not have the quality of other paintings that look like a photograph. We discussed in class that the lamp post is covering a revolutionary statue and that it was probably done on purpose. When I first viewed the painting and the statue was mentioned, I did not think it was done intentionally. I think it is coincidence because the angle he has of the building and its viewpoints is eye catching to me. Since this is on architecture, I think the building was the main focus and it just so happened that the lamp post covered the statue from this angle. To me, if Caillebotte did not want the statue in the picture, he could have simply not painted it.

  3. Dancer on the Stage was an interesting painting to me. This painting is basically about a dancer on stage. Usually, a performing stage is presented nicely, in a fashionable and clean way, but the background for this painting displays the stage as being outdoors and rough. It does not compliment the dancer as an indoor stage would. Also, the dancer, being the main subject of the painting is off-centered. To me this goes to show that not everything is going to center around us even when we are viewing our own lives. No matter how anyone views their life, someone elses life, or anything at all, there is not one single thing that anyone will center their lives around. Everyone's world revolves around many different people and things and no one should ever think that the world revolves around them. Just like this single dancer is performing, the performance is still not all about her.

  4. I never put much attention to art pieces and the aspects of it. Reading Chapter 2 I learned that it is very important where lines are placed. I learned that there are implied lines in paintings. That there is a reason why your eyes are drawn to a certain area in a painting. I also learned about perspective. That perspective adds depth to a flat picture. I also learned how lighting and shading works. That pretty much if there is some form of " Light " in a picture that you will be drawn to it because your eye would automatically focus on the area where the light is at.

  5. Adding to one of the classmates, i really liked the rainy day painting also. Really knowing nothing about art ... after chapter 1 and on i have learned to see some of the ways artists paints them. In the rainy day there are many lines and it it very detailed. I liked how the artist painted so there are two vanishing points and i thought that was pretty cool. I also noticed the light pole in the middle that kind of divides the painting in half. I really dont know why but i noticed it is actually not raining but everyone has umbrellas like its raining and the actual piece is called a rainy day. And also noticed the ground is actually wet. It made me think to why the artist called the painting a rainy day where everyone has umbrellas but its actiually not raining at the moment. There are many lines like henry said and it does make the viewer drawn to a certain are in the painitng.

  6. While reading and trying to understand chapter 2, i found myself reading things up to 4 times. I became frustrated with myself because i could't see the lines and implied lines and vanishing points.I almost gave up. Then, I saw The mystery and Melancholy of a street. This painting made my understanding of chapter 2 so much easier. With this particular painting, I am able to see implied line and vanishing point. There on after, Implied lines were no longer a problem. HURRAY Giorgio De Chirico
